Brian Howell

Brian Howell
Brian D. Howell died at age 53 on November 23, 2003, after a brave fight with lung cancer. He was the loving husband of Pat (nee Andries); and the devoted father of Katie, Allison, and Joseph. Brian was born in Aberdeen, S.D., on November 13, 1950, the son of Alice and David Howell, and was one of nine children. Brian met his wife, Pat at Roncalli High School in Aberdeen, where he started his journalism career working on the school paper.

In 1990, Brian joined the Wisconsin State Journal as its national/foreign editor and later and spent six years as the State Journal’s features editor. In 1997, he became editor of Madison Magazine.

"Our work to increase lung cancer research began while Brian was still alive,” his widow, Pat says. “We have a long way to go to help create hope for others."

Read a column Brian wrote for Madison Magazine about his diagnosis and the stigma attached to lung cancer.
